Shanghai gears up for mixed martial arts extravaganza

ONE: Dynasty of Champions, a mixed martial arts event, is set to make its Shanghai debut on September 1 at Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong New Area.

The main event will feature a middleweight title bout between One middleweight world champion Igor “Lionheart” Svirid of Kazakhstan and challenger Vitaly Bigdash from Russia.

It will be the second leg of this year’s series after the first stop in Guangzhou in June.

In other clashes, American Roger Huerta will meet Japanese fighter Koji Ando in a highly anticipated lightweight contest.

Korean bantamweight sensation Kim Dae-hwan will take on Japan’s Koetsu Okazaki. Major Overall of the United States meets Japan’s Kotetsu Boku in an exciting featherweight bout, while Singapore’s MMA darling Angela Lee is set to fight against Russian kickboxer Elena Pashnina in a female strawweight bout.

Chinese bantamweight fighters Teng Lige from Xi’an and Ayideng Jumayi from Harbin will exchange skills in the China Super Fight of the night. In the two semifinals of the Shanghai flyweight tournament, Xi’an’s Liu Xiaoyang will face Beijing’s Hu Ri Ge, while local boy Wang Yayong takes on Li Gaoyang from Shenyang. The winners will compete in the final of the Shanghai flyweight tournament later in the day. The opening bout will be the Shanghai flyweight tournament alternate featuring a clash between Shanghai’s Wan Jianping and Beijing’s Yang Jianbing.

“We are excited to make our mark in Shanghai this September as we bring the best local and international fighters once again to Chinese mainland,” said Victor Cui, CEO of One Championship.

“This card is headlined by a One middleweight world championship title bout and it will be very exciting to see our Kazakh world champion defend his title.”

Roger “El Matador” Huerta returns to the One cage a year after winning his fight against Christian Holley last August 2014. Huerta has been in the MMA for more than a decade and has a wealth of experience on his resume. His opponent Koji Ando is one of Japan’s fiercest competitors, having been a mixed martial artist since 2008. With an array of diverse striking skills coupled with solid submission grappling credentials, Ando is ready to claim victory against Huerta.

Russian kickboxer Pashnina is based in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, and holds a black belt in Sanda. Pashnina boasts well-rounded stand-up skills, incorporating wrestling and various MMA components into her solid striking game.

The 20-year-old is fresh off her first test inside the One cage last July against Jenny Huang.

Pashnina’s opponent Lee has lived and trained for MMA in Waipahu, Hawaii, for most of her life. At just 19 years of age, Lee is one of the most promising young fighters on One Championship’s growing roster. She scored an impressive victory over Aya Saber in her debut last May, submitting her opponent in the first round with an Armbar.
