Early knockouts take the thrill out of series

FIST of Power III in Beijing failed to live up to the hype last night after two key belt fights ended in the first rounds itself.
The 34-year-old Dalian boxer Ma Yiming was knocked out by Randy Petalcorin of the Philippines in the first round of the WBA World Junior Flyweight Interim Title bout, which was supposed to be a 12-round fight — and the evening’s biggest attraction.
Ma did not manage to come up with a single attack in the first minute following sustained pressure from his fast-moving opponent, who is 10 years younger than him.
“I think I didn’t find my rhythm quick enough when the fight started,” a disappointed Ma said. “I made good preparation for the fight. I’m no longer young, so it’s a big disappointment to lose. I want to fight him again, very much,” he added. “This loss can help me understand the sport better.”
Ma was knocked down twice in less than two minutes. His effort to convince the referee Raul Caiz Jr to let the fight continue was rejected.
In an earlier bout, Ma’s fellow Dalian compatriot Qu Peng needed only 2 minutes and 34 seconds to TKO his Australian opponent Dane Cambell and claim the WBO China Light Heavyweight Belt. The 1.91-meter Qu put his height to good use, forcing Cambell’s corner to throw in the towel and end the fight in the first round.
“I think Ma has the capability to win,” Qu said of Ma. “He lost weight from 50kg to 49kg, and maybe failed to adjust his condition well after that.”
Qu was however thrilled with his own victory, saying his next goal was to win an intercontinental belt.
His opponent Cambell didn’t hide his disappointment at the quick loss. “I prepared six months for this fight and never expected it to end so soon. I was prepared to go the distance. It was a shock to be knocked out in the first round,” the Melbourne native said.
