Zhou soars in Japan win

Zhou Peng scored 16 points as China beat Japan 66-57 at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Manila, the Philippines, yesterday. Shen Zijie added 11 points and 5 rebounds, while Zhao Jiwei had 6 points and 7 assists. The defending champion won its Group B opener despite missing stars like Zhou Qi, Guo Ailun, and Yi Jianlian. Meanwhile, two National Basketball Association players, Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe, didn’t figure for Japan. China will have another match with Japan on Saturday, apart from two more clashes against Chinese Taipei today and on Sunday. The top two teams from each of the six groups will qualify for the Asia Cup directly.
