Stanford sees off Harvard in city Pac-12 clash
STANFORD defeated Harvard 80-70 at the 2016 Pac-12 China Game in Shanghai over the weekend, a United States collegiate match-up that drew more than 7,000 local fans to Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong.
Stanford’s Reid Travis was man of the match, scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. It was the second year the Pac-12 opened its men’s basketball season in China. It also became the first American sports league, collegiate or professional, to host a regular-season contest in China.
Sponsored by Alibaba Group, Pac-12 China Game was co-hosted by the Federation of University Sports of China, which is under the Ministry of Education. The game donated a portion of the ticket sales to the Yao Foundation, set up by Chinese icon Yao Ming to support youth development, education, health and welfare.
Players and coaches of the two teams had a packed schedule in Shanghai last week. They played a friendly match with Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Wednesday, and visited Shanghai Disney Resort to interact with children supported by the Yao Foundation.
On Friday, Stanford coach Jerod Haase took part in the Sino-US University Sports Education Forum at Jiao Tong University, which was also attended by Yao and another former NBA stalwart Bill Walton.
Pac-12 President Larry Scott and FUSC President Yang Liguo announced a two-year extension of the cooperation at the forum, meaning that the Pac-12 China Game will continue in 2017 and 2018. The 2017 match, scheduled for November 1 in Shanghai, will feature Georgia Institute of Technology and University of California, Los Angeles, or UCLA.
FUSC and Pac-12 will also promote women’s football links between universities of the two countries. About 200 Chinese school basketball, athletics, swimming and cheer dancing coaches will be sent to the US for training every year.
