Hornets, Clips primed to play in Shenzhen

THE Charlotte Hornets will play the Los Angeles Clippers in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province, in October in the National Basketball Association’s first game ever in the city bordering Hong Kong, the NBA said yesterday.

The October 11 exhibition contest ahead of the 2015-16 season will take place at Shenzhen Universiade Center, the NBA said.

The Shenzhen game will be followed by another preseason match between the same two teams in Shanghai on October 14.

The Hornets are owned by basketball icon Michael Jordan, while the Clippers’ owner is former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.

The games are part of the NBA’s growing campaign to build the sport and its global fan base.

In 2014-15 season, the NBA held regular-season games in London and Mexico City, in addition to preseason contests in Germany, Turkey, Brazil and China. The league expects to announce additional games in other countries later.

With the 2015 games, the NBA will have played 20 games in China since 2004. The NBA in January announced a contract with Internet provider Tencent Holdings to launch an “NBA League Pass” providing Chinese fans with live and on-demand NBA games through online and mobile delivery. Tencent is based in Shenzhen.

On the court on Tuesday, a last-shot win for the Milwaukee Bucks and a Dallas Mavericks team with something to prove took triumphs over rivals in tight playoff races.

Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the hosts Bucks (35-36) an 89-88 victory over the Miami Heat (32-38) while Monta Ellis scored 38 points on 16-of-27 shooting to spark the Mavericks (45-27) over the visitors and defending champions San Antonio Spurs (44-26) 101-94.

Elsewhere in the NBA on Tuesday, it was: Pistons 108, Raptors 104; Thunder 127, Lakers 117; Kings 107, 76ers 106; and Warriors 122, Trail Blazers 108.
