MLB hits Royals ace Ventura with 9-game ban after melee
KANSAS City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was slapped on Thursday with a nine-game suspension and Baltimore Orioles infielder Manny Machado received a four-game ban following their dust-up at a Major League Baseball game this week.
Both players were also fined for their role in Tuesday’s brawl. US media reported that Machado’s fine was US$2,500. Ventura plunked third baseman Machado with a 160 kmph fastball in the bottom of the fifth inning which caused Machado to drop his bat and take off his batting helmet and charge the pitching mound. The 23-year-old Machado managed to slip a right hand thrown by Ventura then delivered a solid right of his own which knocked the right-handed pitcher down. Both players went to the ground in a wrestling match while their teammates rushed out of their respective dugouts with some trying to break up the fight, while others exchanged pushes and shoves with rival players. Machado and Ventura were the only players ejected from the match at Baltimore’s Camden Yards.
