Chapman for Yanks as Cubs acquire Davis
THE New York Yankees have agreed a five-year US$86 million deal to bring back flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman from the Chicago Cubs, according to a source.
The person spoke on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the contract was still pending a physical. It would be the richest deal ever for a reliever, shattering the US$62 million, five-year contract Mark Melancon got from the San Francisco Giants just two days earlier.
Chapman was acquired by the Yankees from the Cincinnati Reds last offseason, then missed the first 29 games of the season due to a domestic violence suspension. The Cuban was traded to the Cubs in late July and helped them win the World Series, becoming a free agent when it was over.
The Cubs moved to fill the gap by signing All-Star relief pitcher Wade Davis from Kansas City on Wednesday, sending outfielder Jorge Soler to the Royals in exchange.
Davis, who finished out the Royals’ win that clinched the 2015 World Series title, will move right into the ninth-inning role Chapman held at Wrigley Field. Cubs manager Joe Maddon avoided any assessment of who was best. Instead, he offered: “They’re just different kind of pitchers.”
Ian Desmond also wound up in a new spot, leaving the Texas Rangers and reaching a US$70 million deal with the Colorado Rockies on the last full day of baseball’s annual winter meetings.
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen was still in play, and the Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t trade — not yet — outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Meanwhile, San Francisco traded pitcher Chris Heston to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named. Heston pitched a no-hitter in going 12-11 as a rookie in 2015, but spent most of this year in the minors.
