Ratchanok takes Singapore Open and No. 1 ranking
THAILAND’S Ratchanok Intanon came from behind to beat defending champion Sun Yu 18-21, 21-11, 21-14 in the Singapore Open final yesterday, becoming the top female shuttler in world rankings in the process.
It was the 21-year-old’s third successive Superseries win in as many weeks after her triumphs in India and Malaysia. Ratchanok, the 2013 world champion, will displace Spain’s Carolina Marin as No. 1 when the weekly world rankings are updated on Thursday. China’s Sun is ranked 14th. The men’s singles title went to Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who beat Korean Son Wan-ho 21-16, 13-21, 21-14. The unfancied Indonesian, a 31-year-old veteran ranked 56th in the world, had stunned two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan of China in the semifinals.
