No surprise as shuttlers make merry

CHINA continued to show its dominance on Wednesday as two more of its women made the last 16 of the singles at the world championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Leading the way was Wang Yihan, the winner of the world title three years ago, who outplayed Anna Thea Madsen of Denmark 21-13, 21-13, often thumping down the biggest smash in the women’s game.

She was followed by Wang Shi-Xian, the winner of the All-England Open title in Birmingham five months ago, whose superb movement was too much for China’s Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin in a 21-15, 21-18 victory.

Li Xuerui, the Olympic champion, and 12th-seeded Han Li advanced on Tuesday.

On the men’s side, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia continued his quest for a first world title with a convincing 21-12, 21-9 second-round win over Dieter Domke of Germany.

“He is a lower-ranked opponent but he put up a fight although I felt confident all the way through,” said Lee after dispatching his 43rd-ranked opponent.

He remains on course for a final matchup against Chen Long, who advanced 21-11, 21-10 against Marc Zwiebler, another German.

China’s Hong Kong’s Hu Yun and Wang Zhengming of China advanced to the men’s last 16.

Former world junior champion Wang Zhengming was given a scare as Petr Koukal took him to a third game before the sixth seed outlasted the Czech 21-15, 19-21, 21-7.

Home favorite Jan O Jorgensen is on a collision course with Lee after the Dane breezed past his second-round opponent Eetu Heino of Finland 21-9, 21-17 in just under 30 minutes.

“It was a great game. I’m happy with the outcome and the way I played,” said Jorgensen, who is seeded three.
