Malaysian star Lee calls for biennial world event
WORLD number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia has issued a plea to badminton's world governing body to restore the world championships to an event held every other year.
Lee, who swept into the quarter-finals in Copenhagen on Thursday courtesy of a routine 21-11, 21-12 defeat of Irishman Scott Evans, asked the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to reconsider its policy of staging the tournament annually, which it has done so ever since the 2005 edition in Anaheim.
The men's top seed cited the improvement of the Super Series, a group of elite-level tournaments launched in 2007, as part of the reason behind his request.
"It's too much with the Super Series each year as well, especially as the level of that has improved," said Lee.
"There are so many tournaments now and the schedule is rather crowded.
"A world tournament every two years would be better - it would give it more prestige and the players a bit of a break."
Lee, who is bidding for his maiden world title at the eighth attempt in Copenhagen, also sought improved hospitality services for the players in Denmark.
The 32-year-old praised both the stadium and players' hotel but singled out the transportation for criticism.
"I wish the transportation for players would be better. In tennis, the players are given cars to move about," said Lee, hoping the BWF would look into the situation for future events.
