Songjiang half marathon

The inaugural Shanghai Songjiang Half Marathon will be held in suburban Songjiang District on March 20, featuring a total of 10,000 runners in two categories, organizers announced yesterday.

The 21-kilometer half marathon will set 6,000 quotas, while the 12-km health run will see another 4,000 participants. Both races will start from the Happy Valley Amusement Park. The route will cover Chenshan Botanic Garden and Guangfulin archeological site before ending in Songjiang University Town. Applications can be completed through the event’s official website at www.sj-marathon.com before February 29. After a draw, the entry list will be unveiled on March 5. The half marathon requires an entry fee of 198 yuan (US$30), while it is 98 yuan for the health run. “The existing marathon events in Shanghai can hardly meet public demand,” explained Sun Weimin, deputy director of the Shanghai Sports Bureau. “Therefore, we chose a location (in Songjiang) with its beautiful landscape and fewer people to hold the new event while also avoiding an added burden on the city center.”
