Schippers on track, Alembekova soars

WITH the 100-meter gold already secured, Dafne Schippers dominated yesterday’s heats in the 200, the second step in a potential sprint triple at the European Championships.

Running barely 12 hours after winning her first title, the Dutchwoman showed no ill effect as she clocked the fastest time. “It was a real short night. But being tired at the start is nothing new for a heptathlete,” Schippers said.

She turned sprinter for these championships and Wednesday’s 100 was seen as her toughest individual challenge. Early yesterday, despite sore legs, she was able to coast well before the finish line and finish in 22.73 seconds as the fastest qualifier, .02 seconds faster than Dina Asher-Smith of Britain.

The 22-year-old Dutchwoman has the fastest 200 time of the season and if she wins a second gold today she will have to rely on a strong performance from her relay teammates to make it three titles over the weekend.

It would equal the sprint triple of Fanny Blankers-Koen, who won three individual events at the 1950 event.

In the first final of the day, Elmira Alembekova shook off her rivals late in the 20-kilometer walk for a breakaway victory and a first gold medal for Russia.

Behind Alembekova, Lyudmyla Olyanovska of Ukraine took silver and Czech Anezka Drahotova earned bronze.

At 24, Alembekova won her first major title when she crossed the line in Zurich’s old town in 1:27:56, beating Olyanovska by 11 seconds.
