Pearson pulls out
OLYMPIC champion Sally Pearson has withdrawn from the track and field world championships to be held in Beijing in August.
The 28-year-old Australian broke a bone and dislocated her left wrist after crashing over a hurdle in a race in Rome on June 5, and announced yesterday she needs further surgery this week. The recovery process will give her time to take a rest from competition, Pearson said, and “I think it will be a very good mental and physical break for me leading into the Olympics next year.” She added: “At this stage Rio is the highest priority, I’m just going to wrap myself in cotton wool until then and make sure that I don’t injure myself.” Pearson won the silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and gold at the London Games in 2012.
