Bubka in race for top IAAF job
POLE vault great Sergei Bubka has made it official: He's running for president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The Ukrainian announced his candidacy yesterday, confirming what had been widely expected for months.
Bubka will be up against British middle-distance great Sebastian Coe, who announced his bid in November. They are campaigning to succeed Senegal’s Lamine Diack, who steps down in August after serving as president since 1999.
“I am seeking the IAAF presidency to give something back to the world of athletics, which has given so many opportunities to me throughout my life,” Bubka said.
Bubka has been an IAAF council member since 2001 and a vice president since 2007. He serves on the IOC executive board and heads the Ukrainian Olympic Committee. Bubka set 35 world records and won six consecutive world titles during his career.
