Ravens cut Rice after release of new video
THE Baltimore Ravens terminated Ray Rice’s contract and the National Football League suspended him indefinitely on Monday, hours after a video emerged showing the running back striking his then-fiancee in the face.
Rice was already serving a two-game ban from the NFL for the incident, which became public earlier this year when another video showed him dragging an unconscious Janay Palmer, who is now his wife, out of an elevator of an Atlantic City hotel in New Jersey.
The latest video, posted by TMZ, shows the three-time Pro Bowl running back striking Palmer and knocking her to the floor of the elevator.
“The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this afternoon,” the Ravens said in a one-line statement.
“It’s something we saw for the first time today,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of the video. “It changed things.”
The couple eventually married, a day after he was indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault.
Rice signed a five-year, US$35 million contract with the Ravens in 2012 and helped Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers at the end of that season.
