Gronkowski set for back surgery

NEW England star Rob Gronkowski will have back surgery and is likely to miss the remainder of the National Football League regular season, the Patriots said on Thursday.

The tight end, a key pillar of the Patriots offense, was injured during last month’s defeat to the Seattle Seahawks when he took a heavy hit to the chest. He missed one game, and his back trouble flared in a game against the New York Jets two weeks later, the team said.

Several United States media outlets said Gronkowski would be sidelined for eight weeks — theoretically making him available during the week of the Super Bowl, if the Patriots reach the NFL showpiece game in February.

The Patriots said they didn’t expect him back this season, but wouldn’t be sure until after the surgery.

It will be the third time Gronkowski, 27, has undergone back surgery.

Also, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder and will likely miss the remainder of the NFL season, team officials said on Thursday.

Bears coach John Fox said the 33-year-old Cutler will have surgery to repair a torn labrum on his throwing arm and will be placed on injured reserve.

Asked if this might signal the end of Cutler’s checkered career in Chicago, Fox declined to comment.

“The offseason’s the offseason. We’re not there yet,” Fox said.

Cutler suffered the injury in a 16-22 loss to the New York Giants on November 20. Cutler was sacked four times and threw an interception. He sat out last week’s loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Matt Barkley made his first career start versus the Titans, completing 28-of-54 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns.

Cutler missed five games with a right thumb injury earlier in the season. He has thrown for 1,059 yards with four TD passes and five interceptions over five games in 2016.

Cutler, who is in the third season of a seven-year, US$126 million contract, spent seven previous seasons with the Bears.
