Colts sign Luck to richest deal

INDIANAPOLIS Colts quarterback Andrew Luck signed a six-year contract extension through the 2021 season for US$140 million, the richest contract in National Football League history, Colts owner Jim Irsay said on Wednesday.

The biggest prior deal in NFL history saw Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers ink a five-year contract for US$110 million in 2013.

“Andrew has signed through 2021,” Irsay tweeted. “$140 Million over 6 Years... Biggest Contract in NFL History... Congrats to #12!!!”

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson signed a four-year deal last year worth US$87.6 million that featured US$60 million guaranteed, while Luck reportedly will have US$87 million guaranteed, or US$22 million more assured than the old marks to Eli Manning of the New York Giants and fellow QB Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers.

Luck, 26, had been set to make US$16.1 million in the final year of his rookie deal, a team option the Colts picked up in March.

The Colts parted ways with Peyton Manning, who led Indy to a Super Bowl crown and then won it again with the Denver Broncos last season, to set the stage for Luck to be taken first overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. Luck guided the Colts to the playoffs in his first three NFL seasons. His 14,838 passing yards are the most of any quarterback in his first four seasons.
