adidas ‘Republic of Sports’ opens at Shanghai Century Park

MAKING fresh orange juice by riding a spinning cycle, or providing electricity for children in poverty-stricken areas by running on a treadmill … these are the kind of activities that adidas prepared for Shanghai sports lovers during the “Republic of Sports,” a national fitness campaign unveiled by the world-famous sports brand.

The opening ceremony for the “Republic of Sports” was held at Shanghai Century Park, where an indoor venue has been put up to provide a month-long sports and fitness experience for visitors. There they will find sporting gear in all four of adidas’ core categories — football, basketball, training and running.

Despite the scorching heat in Shanghai, the opening ceremony was attended by star guests, including adidas Sports Performance image ambassador and Chinese actor Eddie Peng, rising actor Jiang Jinfu and actress Zhang Lanxin.

Peng took part in the “Guinness World Record” interactive sports activity, challenging the mark by completing a 1-minute workout on a treadmill, wearing a vest weighing 20lbs. Participants in the “Guinness World Record” are encouraged to run the maximum distance, as for each kilometer accumulated, adidas will donate 100 kilowatt-hour of electricity to schools in China’s impoverished areas.

Zhang demonstrated the “Power Your Juice” device, which is an orange juicer powered by a spinning cycle.

“It was a fun and meaningful way to get people involved in sports and exercise,” said Peng. “To me, sport is not about making exercise plans, but to build and enjoy a hobby.”

Peng said running and cycling have always been two of his favorite sports, and they also suit his busy schedule. “I do sports mainly to keep myself fit for acting,” Peng told Shanghai Daily. “I usually do 20 minutes of running or cycling, and then spend some time in the gym. Walking is also a good exercise.”

A lot of Peng’s films are filled with action. He has played roles of a professional cyclist in “To the Fore;” a boxer in “Close to You;” and a gymnast in “Jump Ashin!”. To achieve a better effect, he even got a professional cycling license while preparing for “To the Fore”.

“Taking up these roles helped me better understand the essence of some sports and their fighting spirit.”

Peng said he loves doing outdoor sports, especially in summer when less time is needed to get the body warm and ready. He also gave some tips to those exercising in hot conditions.

“Try to avoid doing sports in an air-conditioned room, as cold air would invade the wet skin easily and cause sickness. I prefer using the fan in summer. Also, one should keep a high spirit when doing exercise.”

“Republic of Sports” is open to the public until August 22.

The venue has also set up booths for adidas’ high-tech products. The BOOST RUN LAB tells visitors the story of development and application of adidas’ BOOST technology in footwear. The RUN GENIE technology helps consumers select the most suitable pair of BOOST running shoes by having their foot shapes measured.
