Top 9-ball stars for Pudong tournament
THE world’s top pool players will show off their skills at the 2015 Pudong Tangcheng World 9-Ball China Open to be held from June 28 to July 5, organizers announced this week.
Coming into its 7th edition, this year’s tournament will feature 64 male and 48 female players from around 30 countries and regions. Among them are the world’s top-ranked pool players, including China’s “9-Ball Queen” Pan Xiaoting, Fu Xiaofang, Kelly Fisher, and Jasmin Ouschan.
The main competition will be held at Shanghai Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong New Area on July 2-5 while qualifying contests will run from June 28, featuring a total of 192 pool players, with the matches being held in billiards clubs in Zhabei and Minhang districts.
The total prize money has been raised to US$333,000 this year. The male champion will win US$40,000 and the female winner will get US$32,000.
Organized by the World Pool-Billiard Association, the China Billiards Association and the Shanghai Sports Bureau, the tournament will stay in Shanghai for another four years until at least 2018.
“After six years, the tournament has grown into China’s most mature 9-ball pool competition,” said Wang Tao, general secretary of the China Billiards Association. “The international tournament will also help promote the sport among the younger generation.”
Billiards is now part of the curriculum in more than ten primary and middle schools in Shanghai. And the organizers will invite Pan Xiaoting, American pool player Jeanette Lee, as well as China’s 9-ball pool national team members to visit schools in Pudong New Area during the tournament and interact with students.
