Malaysia’s David wins squash gold

NICOL David retained her Commonwealth Games singles squash title after beating world champion Laura Massaro in straight games in the women’s final in Glasgow yesterday.

The Malaysian world No. 1 recovered from a slow start to win 12-10, 11-2, 11-5 in just 44 minutes. Massaro could not build on a good start where she led 8-4 and 9-7 in the first game, and there was some controversy in the third game when the English woman was hit in the face by David’s racquet and had a stroke awarded against her.

Massaro appealed to the video referee but the decision was not overturned and David never looked back to triumph.

New Zealand’s Joelle King took the bronze medal.

Earlier, South Africa took the first gold medal on the fifth day of the games when it beat Northern Ireland 19-10 in the men’s lawn bowls triples final.

The win made it two golds out of three in the bowls so far for South Africa following success in the women’s fours on Sunday with New Zealander Jo Edwards taking the women’s singles.

India won a seventh gold medal of the games through Jitu Rai in the men’s 50-meter pistol at Carnoustie on Scotland’s east coast. Australia’s Warreen Potent denied India another gold, however, as he beat Gagan Narang in the 50m rifle prone, with Englishman Kenneth Parr taking bronze.

Meanwhile, England’s Dan Greaves topped the para-sport discus competition at Hampden Park. However, star turn on the first full day of action in the famed football arena was Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada as he progressed smoothly to the semifinals of the men’s 400 meters, winning his heat in 45.52 seconds.

But the top performance of the morning session, however, belonged to Canadian decathlete Damian Warner, who produced a blistering 10.29 seconds in the opening 100 of the two-day 10-discipline event.

The Games record and personal best gave Warner, the reigning world bronze medalist, a massive 1,025 points to kick off his campaign. England’s John Lane and South African Willem Coertzen were next fastest with 10.71 and 10.88.

Lane followed up on his 100 personal best with another in the second event, the long jump, managing a best of 7.50 meters on his second attempt. Warner leapt out to the exact same distance to consolidate his lead on 1,960 points from Lane’s 1861
