Google AI program beats top player in ancient Chinese game Go
GOOGLE'S computer program AlphaGo beat the world's top-ranked player in the ancient Chinese board game Go on Tuesday, re-affirming the arrival of what its developers tout as a ground-breaking new form of artificial intelligence.
AlphaGo took the first encounter in a three-game series against Chinese world number one Ke Jie in a highly anticipated match, a year after it trounced South Korean grandmaster Lee Se-Dol -- the first time a computer programme beat a top player in a full contest.
Just over a year ago, Google made headlines around the world when AlphaGo beat Lee Se-dol. Up until then, the board game had long been thought of as beyond the reach of artificial intelligence programs because of its notorious complexity.
The 19-year-old Ke has been playing professionally since the age of 10 and has beaten Lee several times in recent years.
