Color Run organizers say their events on mainland are safe

Shanghai’s Color Run organizers today insisted their running events on the mainland are safe after people questioned the use of colored powder that caused a fire at a water park that injured nearly 500 people on Saturday in Taiwan.

The 2015 Color Run Shanghai race is likely to be held in September or October although organizers said they are still awaiting final approval. The 5-kilometer fun run usually features thousands of runners who are required to wear white. They will be sprayed with different colors of powder along the route and at the finish line.

The powder used in the Color Run is mainly colored cornstarch, the same the Formosa Fun Coast water park claimed to have used in Saturday’s accident.

“The Color Run has held some 100 events around the world and no similar accidents had ever been reported,” said Wang Yang, a staff with The Color Run organizer IMG. “We are preparing a statement to explain to the public the ingredients in the powder we have been using. The Color Run participants have no reason to worry about their safety.”

Wang told Shanghai Daily that the powder they have been using in China is cornstarch with food coloring and is imported from India. It meets State Drug Administration standards, Wang added.

Last year’s Color Run in Shanghai was held at Oriental Sports Center in Pudong. Shenzhen and Beijing already had events this year. A Color Run was also scheduled next month in both Chongqing and Shenyang.
