Chinese men bask in 5,000m relay victory

CHINA claimed sweet revenge in the men’s 5,000 meters short track speed skating, as Wu Dajing led his teammates to a close victory over South Korea at the Asian Winter Games yesterday.

Wu, disqualified from an earlier 1,000-meter race after tangling with a South Korean, said the 5,000 win was the result of good team work. “We are delighted that we beat South Korea after a disappointing 1,000,” said Wu, China’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.

Wu, along with Ren Ziwei, Han Tianyu and Xu Hongzhi, had been trading the lead with South Korea and Japan before storming home first ahead of the Koreans to take China’s third short track gold in Sapporo.

Japan took the bronze medal.

“Our next goal is the world championships, which will take place in about two weeks,” said Wu, adding that team officials encouraged them to “pull teeth from the tiger’s mouth” and stand up to the challenge from South Korea at the worlds and next year’s Olympic Games.

South Korean skaters were unbeatable at the other three events as they wrapped up their short track campaign with five golds out of the eight available.

Shim Suk-hee won the women’s 1,000 gold over teammate Choi Min-jeong, and the two went on to lead the country to the 3,000 relay gold medal, ahead of China and Kazakhstan.

Shim won in 1 minute, 30.376 seconds, with Choi taking silver in 1:30.451. Sumire Kikuchi of Japan won bronze in 1:30.544, The Associated Press reported.

South Koreans Seo Yi-ra and Sin Da-woon finished 1-2 in the men’s 1,000 final at the Makomanai Skating Rink.

Seo clocked 1:24.097 for his first Asian Winter Games gold, with Sin second in 1:24.119 and compatriot Lee Jung-su third in 1:24.169.

South Korea has been dominant in short track speed skating since it was introduced at the 1992 Albertville Olympics but managed only two gold medals at the 2014 Sochi Games. The hosts of the 2018 Olympics are aiming to reclaim their dominance in Pyeongchang.

South Korea also won three gold medals in speed skating yesterday.

Olympic gold medalist Lee Seung-hoon won the men’s 10,000 in 13:18.56, while Kim Bo-reum won the women’s 5,000 in 7:12.58, adding to her silver in the 3,000 on Monday.

South Korean men took the team pursuit title in 3:44.32.

Elsewhere, Yohei Koyama of Japan captured the men’s giant slalom gold medal. Koyama led both runs on the Teine New Slalom Course, winning in 2:17.51 to finish ahead of Kim Hyeon-tae of South Korea and Hideyuki Narita of Japan.
