‘Black Bruce Lee’ ready for city fight

MMA star Anderson “The Spider” Silva claims martial arts changed his life, adding that when he was a child he would call himself the “black Bruce Lee.”

The 42-year-old Brazilian was in Shanghai yesterday to promote the “UFC Fight Night” which will be staged at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong New Area on November 25.

It will be the debut show for Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization, on the Chinese mainland.

Asked for his views on Chinese martial arts, Silva said he used to practice martial arts in Los Angeles.

“Martial arts changed my life. It’s not about fighting or destroying, but about controlling your body and mind,” he revealed.

Silva listed some of his kung fu idols, including the legendary Bruce Lee, and current Hong Kong movie icons Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen. “They are Chinese heroes. I used to call myself black Bruce Lee as a kid. I respect Bruce Lee’s legend, and would even try new movements in training after watching him.”

Silva will take on middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum of the United States in the main fight of the night. Holding the longest title streak in UFC history, Silva is regarded as the greatest MMA athlete of all time.

Chinese fighters, including Li Jingliang and Wang Guan, will also showcase their skills in front of a home crowd on the night. Their opponents are yet to be announced, however.
