Dapu Rd tunnel to reopen in January

BOTH the renovated section and a newly built tube of the Dapu Road Tunnel are expected to finish construction and open in late January, officials from the Shanghai Urban Construction Co said yesterday.

The project will double the tunnel's traffic capacity in the busy Dapu Road area. It's a key part of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo infrastructure connecting Expo zones in Puxi and Pudong.

Whether the old and new tubes will open to traffic at the same time is still unknown, said Chen Guanghui, a Shanghai Urban Construction spokesman.

Also yesterday, the advanced technologies used in the new tube construction passed evaluation by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission.

The machinery has the largest diameter of any domestically developed digger - 11.22 meters.
