POLICE have abandoned their search of a mountain area in central China after an escaped prisoner is still on the run four days after the jailbreak.

This doesn't mean the prison has given up the manhunt, but reflects an adjustment of strategy, Xie Huazhang, politics department dean of the Deshan Prison of Hunan Province's Changde City, told today's Guangzhou Daily.

By 8pm yesterday, no development was reported on the hunt for the escapee, Liu Hong, 38, who had been serving a 20-year term for robbery and a previous prison escape, according to Xie.

Liu escaped Deshan jail around 8am on Sunday by climbing the fence, according to jail officers.

Intensive searches of a nearby mountain had failed to find any trace of the missing prisoner. Rewards of up to 50,000 yuan (US$7,323) have been offered for his arrest.
