Todd Wilson of Ipswich, Massachusetts, plays with his daughter Nicole, 7, in a swimming pool as waves crash onto the shore in the background in Cancun, Mexico, yesterday. Hurricane Ida passed the resort area yesterday and is moving over the Caribbean. It strengthened off Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula as heavy rain killed at least 42 people in El Salvador. Ida was poised to enter the Gulf of Mexico last night and could gain additional strength as it churns through the oil and gas production facilities of the gulf before weakening as it heads back toward the United States coast later this week.
