A magnitude 2.5 earthquake occurred in Songjiang District over the weekend, Shanghai Seismological Bureau said yesterday.

Some residents felt the quake, considered shallow at 13 kilometers underground.

It mildly shook Songjiang, close to the border of Qingpu, about 5pm on Saturday. It lasted less than 10 seconds.

"I suddenly felt the chair moving when I was operating the computer," said Shen Lujia, a Songjiang resident.

She was wondering whether it was a quake while her mother considered it to be a blast, Shen said.

Weak quakes, below magnitude 3, will not cause damage and occur five or six times in the city every year, said Wang Jianjun, deputy director of the bureau.
