A MAN in northwest China's Gansu Province has been arrested after allegedly poisoning his ex-girlfriend and eight of her friends and family with the radioactive poison thallium.

Police in Jiayuguan City also arrested the storeowner who allegedly sold him the thallium powder, today's Lanzhou Morning Post reported.

Cai Baozhu planned the poisoning to take revenge after his girlfriend Yang Li wanted to break up, police said.

He was alleged to have put thallium into two meals at the family's home in June 2008 and April 2009.

Yang, her daughter, boyfriend and six colleagues soon lost their hair and developed aches and pains. They were later diagnosed with thallium poisoning.
