A FEASIBILITY report on the construction of a bridge linking Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, was approved by the State Council yesterday in Beijing.
The construction of the bridge will forge stronger economic and social ties in the Pearl River Delta, said a statement issued after an executive meeting of the State Council, which was chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.
Upon completion, the bridge will lead to a comprehensive transportation system and a highway network between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the statement said.
The project will also boost the competitiveness of the Pearl River Delta and increase social and economic development in the region, it said.
The bridge is expected to cost 72.6 billion yuan (US$10.63 billion).
