SPORTING Gijon and Zaragoza finished 1-1 to end the fourth round of the Spanish league yesterday.
Against the run of play, Sporting's Diego Castro started an attack from midfield and his strike from 25 meters (yards) deflected in off a defender in the 29th minute.
The equalizer came in the 54th, when unmarked midfielder Abel Aguilar headed in his first goal of the season for Zaragoza.
Zaragoza defender Javier Paredes made a rash challenge on Luis Moran in the 60th but, inexplicably, referee Turienzo Alvarez gave the yellow card to Francisco Pavon.
Sporting striker Mate Bilic took the free kick but crashed it into the defending wall.
Barcelona was a 4-1 winner against Racing Santander on Tuesday and leads the standings on goal difference from Real Madrid, which beat Villarreal 2-0. Both leaders have 12 points. Sevilla was third ahead of Athletic Bilbao, both on 9.
The other results were; Atletico Madrid 2, Almeria 2; Espanyol 2, Malaga 1; Xerez 0, Deportivo La Coruna 3; Valladolid 1, Osasuna 2; Tenerife 1, Athletic Bilbao 0; and Getafe 3, Valencia 1.
