Beijing police on night patrol to be armed

SECURITY in Beijing and neighboring areas is being stepped up with police on night patrols being issued with guns from September 15, Xinhua news agency reported today.

It is the latest step to ensure safety during the National Day celebrations. The 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China will be celebrated on October 1.

Armed police in Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Shandong, which surround Beijing, have been ordered to tighten security.
