CHINESE police caught 3,167 drunk drivers last weekend after it started a two-month nationwide campaign, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.

Since Saturday, police across the country tightened monitoring on main roads near restaurants, hotels and pubs and set up checkpoints, said a ministry statement.

The action was launched to prevent serious accidents ahead of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1 and after a number of alcohol-related road fatalities.
