NEARLY 30 South Korean men working in the city donated platelets at Shanghai Blood Center yesterday.

Shanghai needs 6,000 liters of platelets a year. However, the city only collected 1,200 liters last year.

Ahn Byung Kook, managing director and president of Lock & Lock China, said he heard of the shortage through the media and asked staff and colleagues to donate.

"In addition to donating money, we can do more to express our love to the city and its people," he said.

Officials at the center said they were confident of fulfilling this year's target of collecting 2,400 liters.

Platelets are found in blood plasma and are used to treat patients with diseases such as leukemia.
