Scholar dies at 98

Renowned Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin died at the age of 98 in Beijing yesterday.

Ji, a native of east China's Shandong Province, is well known for his research on ancient Indian aboriginal languages, primeval Buddhist languages and Sanskritic literature and his translation of many works in these languages.

Fluent in 12 foreign languages, he was an oriental studies professor at Peking University from 1946 to 1983 and also act as the university's deputy president.

A special group has been set up at Peking University to handle his funeral arrangements, according to a posting on the university's Website.
