THE Metro Line 8 extension will begin trial runs on July 5 – a boon for residents in Minhang District's Pujiang Town who will be able to cut their downtown traveling time.

There are nine new stations on the extension from Chengshan Road Station in Pudong New Area to the Airspace Science Park Station in Minhang District, according to the Shanghai Morning Post today.

Residents in Pujiang Town, one of the nine new towns in the city with Italian-style architecture, will now be able to reach People's Square in half an hour on the Metro. At present the bus trip takes an average two hours.

Tens of thousands of residents living within the Shanghai World Expo site have been relocated to Pujiang Town.

By the end of the year, Metro Line 7, the second phase of line 9 and the northern section of line 11 will be operating.

The metro network in Shanghai will have 11 lines and 400 kilometers before the world expo.
