Castillo's error gives Yankees wild win over Mets

SECOND baseman Luis Castillo dropped Alex Rodriguez's lazy popup with two outs in the ninth inning, allowing two runs and the New York Yankees to escape with a wild 9-8 victory over the Mets in interleague play yesterday.

David Wright had put the Mets ahead 8-7 with an eighth-inning double off Mariano Rivera (1-2), and Francisco Rodriguez (1-1) appeared to escape a ninth-inning jam on the popup by Rodriguez, just 1 for 17 in his career off K-Rod.

But Castillo allowed the ball to pop out of his glove as he tried for a one-handed catch on the right field grass. The Yankees ran onto the field as Derek Jeter scored from second and Mark Teixeira from first.

Rangers 6, Dodgers 0

At Arlington, Texas, Vicente Padilla worked five effective innings, Hank Blalock homered and Texas recorded shutouts on consecutive nights at home for the first time in 29 seasons.

Texas, which beat Toronto 1-0 on Thursday, held visitors scoreless on consecutive days for the first time since April 1981.

Padilla (5-3) threw 108 pitches before Jason Jennings went three innings and Jason Grilli pitched the ninth to close out Texas' fifth shutout of the season.

Blalock connected leading off the sixth against Hiroki Kuroda (1-2) to make it 3-0.

Twins 7, Cubs 4

At Chicago, Joe Mauer homered and earned three RBIs and Kevin Slowey became the majors' second nine-game winner for Minnesota.

Slowey (9-2) allowed three runs on four hits over six innings, striking out 10 and walking one.

Jason Kubel homered and Brendan Harris had three hits for the Twins.

Chicago starter Randy Wells (0-3) allowed four runs in 3 2-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

Indians 7, Cardinals 3

At Cleveland, Choo Shin-soo drove in three runs for the Indians to help rookie pitcher David Huff get his second big league win.

Huff (2-2), making his sixth major league start, gave up a leadoff homer to Albert Pujols in the fourth and left with one out in the eighth after allowing three runs.

Joel Pineiro (5-7) allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings, losing his seventh start in his last eight.

Marlins 7, Blue Jays 3

At Toronto, Cody Ross hit a tiebreaking grand slam and Chris Coghlan had a career-high four hits for Florida.

Toronto ace Roy Halladay left after three innings because of a sore groin.

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez returned to the starting lineup after missing one game with a sore groin and went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Ross' third grand slam of the season and fifth of his career came off Brandon League (1-3).

Tigers 3, Pirates 1

At Pittsburgh, Rick Porcello threw seven crisp innings for Detroit and had a pair of RBI singles for his first major league hits. Porcello (7-4) allowed only one run and six hits.

Placido Polanco went 4 for 4 for Detroit.

Royals 4, Reds 1

At Kansas City, Missouri, Luke Hochevar tossed a three-hitter in his first career complete game and Alberto Callapso hit a two-run homer for the home team.

Hochevar (3-2) needed just 80 pitches for his second straight solid outing. There wasn't much offense, but homers by Callapso and Billy Butler were enough to beat Cincinnati starter Matt Maloney (0-1) in his second career start. Jonny Gomes hit his first homer since July 23 for the Reds.

Braves 7, Orioles 2

At Baltimore, Brian McCann tied a career high with four hits and Tommy Hanson recorded his first major league victory for Atlanta.

Hanson (1-0) struggled in his second major league start but managed to limit the Orioles to two runs despite yielding nine hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Red Sox 5, Phillies 2, 13 innings

At Philadelphia, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 13th inning as Boston won an interleague matchup between division leaders.
