A 52-year-old migrant worker was killed after a 10 meter-high scaffold collapsed on an elevated road in Minhang District, southwest of downtown, yesterday morning.

Lu Yuezhang, from southwestern China's Yunnan Province, was struck in head and died at the scene. Six others were injured.

At least 10 workers were standing on the scaffold pouring concrete into a post's steel mould of the elevated road when the post suddenly started leaning and fell, said workers who witnessed the accident on the construction site on Huaxiang Road near Beiqing Road.

"There was a big bang, which I thought was an earthquake first," a passer-by surnamed Lu told the Shanghai Evening Post.

The six injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. One man was still in critical condition last night, with the other five suffering broken ribs.
