HONG Kong yesterday confirmed its third case of swine flu - a 23-year-old student from Guangdong Province who flew to the territory from New York.

The patient, who is studying at an American university, was taken to hospital after he arrived on Cathay Pacific flight CX 831 on Saturday night. Infrared scanners at the airport detected a fever and he reported flu symptoms, Hong Kong Undersecretary for Food and Health Gabriel Leung told a news conference yesterday.

Thomas Tsang, controller of Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection, said officials are tracking down the student's fellow passengers.

Tsang said the patient was only passing through Hong Kong.
