A MAN stabbed his foster mother to death and injured his former daughter-in-law yesterday at an apartment in Jing'an District, police said.

The man, surnamed Mao, was soon caught. His motive was unclear, police said.

The incident occurred about 2pm when a guard at the Deyi Residential Building, at the intersection of Nanjing Road W. and Shimen No.2 Road, heard a scream. The guard said a man in his 60s rushed out of the building with a knife in his hand. There were blood stains in the elevator.

Mao's foster mother, an 89-year-old woman surnamed Liu, was found dead in the apartment and Mao's former daughter-in-law, a 32-year-old woman surnamed Hu, had serious stab wounds. She was taken to Changzheng Hospital where she is out of danger after emergency treatment. Doctors said she had been stabbed in the neck, chest and hands but vital organs were not affected.

Witnesses said Mao had locked Liu and an ayi inside for more than two hours and had called Hu to come to the apartment. He is alleged to have stabbed the elderly woman and then attacked Hu after she turned up.

Hu's sister, who had gone to the apartment with her, was too upset to comment.

Neighbors said Liu had sued her foster son for the property right of the apartment and had won the lawsuit with the help of Hu. The apartment was worth about 800,000 yuan (US$117,197).
