THE father of a woman in Chongqing Municipality has demanded compensation of 200,000 yuan (US$29,260) after she was found dead the day after being taken into custody by the police.

At the People's Court of Chongqing's Kaixian County, the police denied responsibility but offered 70,000 yuan, the Chongqing Times reported yesterday.

On January 8 last year, Shi Changqiong, 37, was mistaken for a prostitute when she checked into a local hotel with her boyfriend. Both were taken to a police station for questioning.

Shi Changqiong was found the next morning lying on a street near the police station. She was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Her father, Shi Guangrong, believes his daughter was injured during questioning. The police said she died after falling from a height.

The court ruled the detention was illegal, and will decide on the compensation claim later.
