THE number of netizens in China had reached 298 million by the end of 2008, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) revealed in a report.
The 23rd Statistical Report on Internet Development in China also shows the number of mobile phone web users had totaled 117.6 million, surpassing the 100 million mark.
The number of broadband users stood at 270 million, accounting for 90.6 percent of all netizens.
The number of Chinese netizens represents a 41.9 percent increase, or 88 million, over the previous year, keeping up a strong growth momentum.
Mobile phone web users increased by a surprising rate of 133 percent from 2007. The number of rural netizens registered a 60.8 percent growth rate to reach 84.6 million.
