THE Biyun International Community in Pudong New Area has appointed a new neighborhood committee official after more than 80 people applied for four 100,000-yuan (US$14,633) posts.

The community had planned to enroll four new members, but only one, a former marketing official in an international company, had the qualifications required.

Of the original applicants, eight had master's degree and an overseas education background. But most lacked community administrative experience.

The new member, a woman in her 30s surnamed Zhu, is on a two-month probation before final employment, officials from Jinqiao Town said.

She will be responsible for organizing cultural activities among residents from all over the world, apart from her other duties which include mediating in disputes.

Zhu's first job was to promote a charity auction featuring Chinese calligraphy and paintings and get foreign residents involved in the community.
