TEN gardens are expected to open alongside Suzhou Creek around the Spring Festival, according to project managers.

Shanghai Jianghai Water Conservancy Co said colorful ceramic tiles have been added to the newly strengthened flood-prevention wall and workers are now planting greenery.

"For many years, people had the impression that the flood-prevention wall along the creek looked dirty and monotonous," said Lu Min, an engineer with the company.

Lu said the creek-side garden near Changfeng Park in Putuo District is almost finished. "Flowers, trees and grass will make the area along the creek look as good as other green spaces," he said.

The downtown section of the creek runs for 17 kilometers. Outdoor cafes, bars and small stores will be opened along its route.

"We expect the anti-flood wall to be multi-functional, offering relaxing areas for tourists," said Lu.
