A GREENER sweeper boat, which began operations on the Huangpu River yesterday, will play a key role in keeping the waters free from waste along 2010 Shanghai World Expo sites.

The 26.5-meter boat is powered by electricity and a small diesel engine.

Compared to traditional diesel boats, it is faster and has reduced emissions.

The boat, named "Light of the Century," could save 16.1 tons of diesel each year compared to existing sweeper vessels, saving about 96,000 yuan (US$14,017) in running costs.

The boat has a deeper reach allowing it to collect more waste than conventional vessels. It is also equipped with an automatic control system which enables the operator to stay inside the control room instead of having to collect waste himself.

Another difference is that the waste is stored in closed containers, reducing smell and preventing an eyesore.

The local sanitary authority invested several million yuan in inventing the system and building the boat.

A similar boat with improved functions is also being built and will come into service in the first half of next year.

The greener sweeper boats will focus on removing waste from the waters alongside the Expo zones.
