BORDEAUX beat Valenciennes 2-1 to climb into provisional third place in the French league yesterday.

The win took Bordeaux onto 29 points from 17 rounds, five points behind leader Lyon, which has played a game less.

Marouane Chamakh headed in Wendel's cross in the 35th minute for Bordeaux but a minute later, Bordeaux defender Souleymane Diawara had to clear off his goal line a shot from Siaka Tiene.

The equalizer came from Gregory Pujol in the 43rd.

Bordeaux came out strongly after the break and Fernado Cavenaghi pounced on a poor clearance to make it 2-1 in the 47th.

A minute later Bordeaux playmaker Yoann Gourcuff hit the crossbar with a powerful strike.
