ASIAN Champions League winner Gamba Osaka could miss out on the 2009 tournament because of new rules being introduced to the event.
Gamba, which claimed this year's Asian title with a 5-0 aggregate win over Australia's Adelaide United, won't be assured of a place in Asia's premier club competition next year as defending champions. There is no automatic spot in the 32-team competition for defending champion. With Gamba set to finish outside the top three in the J-League, its only chance of defending its title next year is through the Emperor's Cup, Japan's equivalent of the FA Cup.
