THE city's largest thermal power plant plans to build a new coal-fired power generator with up to 1.5 million kilowatts of capacity in Pudong, the Shanghai Waigaoqiao No.3 Power Generation Co Ltd said yesterday.
"Our hope is to establish a more advanced power generator near our two existing generating units," said Feng Weizhong, the company's deputy manager.
Shanghai Waigaoqiao announced the plan as Wan Gang, China's minister of science and technology, visited the company yesterday.
A patent that increases the generator's efficiency by about 6 percent may be applied to the new power generator, according to Feng.
"Some giant foreign companies have shown a strong interests in cooperating with us on the project," Feng said.
The company has operated Shanghai's second coal-fired, 1-million-kw power generator for about five months.
The two generating units at Waigaoqiao Power Plant have achieved a ratio between coal consumption and electricity generation that matches the world's highest standard.
