Fair to display latest tech systems

WAITING passengers at bus stations in Shanghai will be able to take advantage of a new public transport system so that they can better plan their journey.

The newly developed system, among the many models shown at the five-day China International Industry Fair which begins today, will let passengers know road conditions, how far a bus is from the station and help them to estimate how soon it will arrive.

That's because buses will be installed with a global positioning system, a calculating system for data and government management as well as a security alarm system to report crime or accidents. Cameras in the buses will display the interior and images will be relayed to the control center and television screens at bus stops.

"We started to install the system for trial on some buses of Line 210 in May,'' said Qian Qing, deputy manager of Shanghai Transportation Investment Information Technology Co Ltd, developer of the bus information system under the support of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. ''So far, one bus has been installed with the passenger calculating system and two buses with the security alarm system. Some stops of Line 210 have or will be installed with the intelligent system with light emitting diode display screens empowered by solar batteries at the top."

The LED screens on bus stop can display information about the next bus and the road situation to passengers. Information from other bus lines and the subways is also available once the network is developed further.

Environment protection technologies, biomedical technologies and medicine monitoring systems will be on show.
