FIVE city officials in China's coal-rich Shanxi Province have been punished for allowing illegal mining, the provincial government said yesterday.

It said a team of State Council officials found during a routine inspection in Fenyang on October 3 that large-scale illegal mining operations at the Shizhuang Township in the city were occurring. At least six collieries were operating without licenses in Fenyang, the panel found. The Shanxi provincial discipline inspection committee decided Xu De, the city's Party chief, mayor Yan Guoping and three other officials failed in their duties of supervision.
